The countdown to the opening of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has begun in Sochi Olympic Park. 2018 balloons of the colors of the Russian flag were released at Medals Plaza.

Sochi will host four Confederations Cup matches in 2017, and Sochi will host six World Cup games directly in 2018. After the opening speech of the head of Sochi, an interactive countdown clock was launched on the big screens - 1000 days before the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

An interactive zone for children and teenagers with contests, quizzes and performances by artists of the original genre was organized at Medals Plaza. At the end of the evening, DJ LEGRAN (Moscow) and singer Maxim performed for the guests.

33 cities of Russia participated in the celebration on the occasion of the beginning of the 1000-day countdown to the World Cup on September 18. Celebrations began on Manezhnaya Square in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the participants of the action in the capital via teleconference from Sochi.

The Head of State assured that the 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held at the highest level and will certainly go down in the history of world sports. «Preparations for the World Cup in eleven cities of our country, which had the honor to host the championship, are in full swing. And everything will be done to host the 32 leading national teams of the planet, to create conditions that will allow them to show all their skills and give a real big football to a multi–million audience of fans,» Vladimir Putin promised.

The World Cup matches will be held from June 14 to July 15 at 12 stadiums in 11 cities of Russia. In addition to Sochi, the Games will be held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Samara and Rostov-on-Don.

The 1/8 and 1/4 finals of the tournament will be held in Sochi on June 30 and July 7, respectively. The Russian national team will hold matches of the group stage of the world Championship in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Samara. The opening ceremony and the final of the World Championship will be held in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.
